FAQ's About Commissions & Portraits

Q: About Commissions and Portraits?

A:   When a Portrait or Artwork is commissioned it is a meeting of your requirements and ideas and our talent and the creative interpertation.  This makes it a unique work of Art.   The essence of an Artwork requires not only skill in the craft and material but a sensitivity and ablitiy to interpret the subject.
I bring 40 years of experience in Portrait Sculpture and Commissioned Artworks to the table and a vast understanding of materials to complete your commission.

Q: What types of Materials do you work in?

A:   Traditional materials such a lost wax cast bronze and sterling silver is an expertise of mine having cast my own bronze and sterling in my studio-foundry. Copper Repousse, resin castings and constructions; cast plasters and stone are materials which are part of my palatte.

Q: What Material should I choose?

A:   The type of material you choose for the final Artwork is influenced by the subject, size, placement i.e. inside or outdoors and pricing.
A completed life-size portrait head or bust cast in stone would cost about 40% less than the same work cast in bronze.
Bases and pedestal are priced separately.  Marble, Granite and Hardwoods (i.e. teak, rosewood). Composite materials for economy or weight.

Q: Are Sitting or Photographs required?

A:   Portrait Sculptures maybe completed from life sittings if the subject is available.  I like to have a meeting and photo session to begin; sittings run two hours apiece.  We make the sittings convenient and fexiable.
Photo's maybe used exclusively if necessary.

Q: Time required to make a Portrait Sculpture

A:  1) A Portrait is first sculpted in Clay, - this usually requires 2 -4 weeks.
    2) Molds are then made on the clay model, est. 10 days.
    3) Hydrocal or Hydrostone casting is made est. 1 week.
this casting can be used for the final sculpture or as a proof for the bronze cast.
Bronze Castings require 4 to 6 weeks additional.

Q: Pricing, Payment and Questions about your Commission

A:   I sure you have many more questions about Portraits and Commissioned Artwork.  As all Art is made to order it's best to quote price on a particular project. Pricing for Portrait Heads and Busts cast in stone begin at $ 3,500.00.  Payment schedule for this item is 1/3 to begin; 1/3 approval of Clay; 1/3 to cast; Delivery FOB, CIF Virginia Beach.  To discuss your requirements give me a call; Tel. 757-962-4778 or drop me an e-mail:

Thank you for your interest, Bill Osmundsen
